Challenge / Goal
The usage behavior of infrastructure is difficult for a city administration to estimate. Collecting data is therefore a great advantage for sustainable urban planning. This allows traffic flows to be visualized and popular routes to be identified.
Solution
A sensor was installed in the concrete of the Blautal cycle path. The Eco-compteur sensor installed there detects cyclists and the direction of travel of the bicycles. The data record generated in this way enables access to this counting data via API. This makes frequency differences visible. Significant fluctuations in the count can occur when the cycle path is closed, e.g. due to construction work.
The data is transmitted once a day at night via mobile radio card. They represent the number of bicycles counted (regardless of the direction of travel) that have crossed the permanent counting point within 15-minute intervals. A public website presents this data separately for bicycles traveling into and out of the city in an easily understandable way.
