Challenge / Goal
Peak demand hours in district heating require more power than the plant can provide normally. Therefore, backup plants must be turned on to provide the needed power. Typically the backup plants are operating with fossil fuels such as oil or coal. The solution allows the consumers to operate as flexible loads which can reduce their demand instead of raising the supply and consequently reduce the CO2 emissions.
Solution
An interface between the supplier and consumer was created, specifically for the commercial building at the Espoo shopping centre Sello. This interface allows Fortum to send forecasts of high-demand hours, and the building management system (BMS) of the shopping centre then automatically adjusts consumption before and/or after the peak hours, reducing heating demand during those critical times.
