Challenge / Goal
The Smart City Project Freiburg is based on the digitization strategy of the city of Freiburg and aims to build a comprehensive data space that will enable integrated and sustainable urban development through data integration, among other things, and simplify the management of municipal processes.
Accessibility planning also plays a central role here. It deals with how accessible various destinations and facilities are for the population. The accessibility of facilities, workplaces and services has a significant impact on the quality of life of city residents. It ensures that all citizens, regardless of their social or economic status, have access to important urban services.
Solution
In this context, the digital planning tool GOAT is used. GOAT is an innovative open-source WebGIS application that includes a variety of data and different accessibility indicators (walking, cycling, public transport).
In addition to standard GIS functionalities, GOAT offers analytical functionalities for integrated urban and transport planning. This allows planners to analyze the current state and evaluate the impact of new concepts and projects, such as the construction of new infrastructure or facilities (e.g. supermarkets, bikesharing stations). Planning processes can thus be carried out more efficiently and at lower cost.
The city of Freiburg obtains GOAT as a SaaS subscription and uses the tool for planning retail concepts, among other things.
