Challenge / Goal
Ambulances arriving at accidents earlier save lives. The same applies to fire trucks and police cars. However, on their route, these vehicles have to cross traffic lights that do not know the vehicle is in a hurry. Although driving through red lights is allowed for emergency vehicles, it takes time and is dangerous. Therefore, the Government of Yucatan in Mexico has chosen to implement innovative C-ITS technology, giving green light at all intersections an emergency vehicle passes on their way to and from an incident.
Solution
Peek Traffic provided cooperative technology based on communications between road users and intelligent infrastructure. The anonymised real-time GPS data of emergency vehicles continuously send their anonymised GPS and speed data, via the mobile network, to a local fleet management database. This data is processed in the FlowSense Cloud and mapped on a digital duplication of the infrastructure of the city. When nearing an intersection, the traffic lights are dynamically adjusted by the FlowSense cloud, depending on the needs of the emergency vehicles. This data is sent to the on-street traffic light controller. Priority requests at traffic light controllers are processed by the control algorithm and absolute priority for the emergency vehicle is provided in time.
