Challenge / Goal
In the project, the city of Ulm is developing open-source software for bicycle rental systems. After completion of the project, the software is to be made freely available to all interested parties, especially municipalities and small businesses.
What is special here is that the developed vehicle-sharing system is to be equipped with suitable open-data interfaces through which it can be seamlessly linked with other mobility services in the long term. The newly developed system can then, for example, be displayed together with other mobility offerings, such as buses and trains, in various mobility apps. In this way, it becomes possible to use the bicycle as the first or last mile in road traffic and a contribution is made to making sustainable mobility as convenient and simple as possible. Thanks to the open-source approach, the software can be used and improved not only by individual transport service providers and municipalities, but also by technically savvy citizens themselves.
Solution
The software is being tested together with the employees of the city of Ulm using a test bike pool. The goal of the practical test phase is to gradually test and improve the sharing system and, at the same time, to make it easier for city employees to make their daily journeys between properties.
