Challenge / Goal

Thanks to the project, separate collection of packaging wastes at source, preventing them from mixing with garbage, minimising the loss of time and labour force that will occur with the collection from households, providing economic support, using the existing workforce for the realisation of new projects is intended to be utilised. The transformation of wastes sent to landfill facilities, which are not normally sorted, into market vouchers enables citizens to earn twice.

With the project, both the amount of waste going to landfill is reduced and the waste turns into earnings. The goal is to create zero waste awareness, to reach more people every day and to increase the recycling rate in Fatih district by 25%. It is among the goals to increase the number of recycling workshops we have realised within the scope of the project by 15%.

Solution

The primary aim was to raise recycling awareness and increase the amount of recycled waste. For this purpose, the common focus areas of waste collection points were first analysed in order to reach more people. Afterwards, a cost analysis was made. The cost of operating a mobile waste collection vehicle, personnel costs and the costs of the Transformation Card to be given to citizens were analysed. Waste points were determined according to the types of waste collected.

The project initially started with a mobile waste collection vehicle at 12 points. Mass information messages were sent to make citizens aware of our project. Posters and banners were placed at waste collection points. The awareness of the project increased with each passing day and the number of requested points increased. In order to keep up with the demands, Fatih Municipality increased the number of Mobile Waste Collection Vehicles to 3 and the number of waste collection points to 30. In addition, 2 Fixed Waste Collection Centres serve to inhabitants 6 days a week and accept waste.
